Issue

Some Android devices have a setting that allows disabling weak WiFi network connections to mitigate the possibility of very slow browsing. The intent appears to be that it would allow the phone to then select a better network or avoid intermittent loading, which may be frustrating. A side effect of this is that, since all of our networks broadcast from the same access points, they may be temporarily disabled due to weak signals, without allowing the device to verify it is online successfully, if slow.

Resolution

To check and modify this setting, take the following steps:

  1. Go to Settings > WiFi
  2. Open the menu, likely in the lower left or upper right (three dots in a column), and select Advanced
  3. Uncheck the "Avoid poor connections" box
  4. Go back to attempt the connection again
