Important Notice

Beginning August 17, 2020, all faculty and students must activate their University Zoom account and use it to access UAlbany-scheduled Zoom sessions. Please visit Teaching and Learning for Zoom resources in the classroom. On September 27, 2020, Zoom will require that all Zoom meetings have a Passcode or a Waiting Room enabled. About the Service

Use Zoom for online teaching or interactive meetings for up to 300 attendees.

Zoom can be used on various platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Blackberry, and H.323/SIP room systems.

Features:

  • Chat and audio & video web conferencing  cloud-based video conferencing platform that can be used to host and join video conferencing meetings, audio conferencing, online teaching and chat
  • Screen Sharing:  Zoom screen sharing allows you to share the desktop, window, application or audio/video. Zoom allows you to also send computer audio to the remote attendees when sharing a video or audio clip. 
  • Dial-in join a meeting by traditional phone or cell phone
  • File sharingIn-Meeting file transfer allows you to send files to other meeting participants during the meeting through the in-meeting chat

  • Break Out Rooms: Breakout rooms allow you to split your Zoom meeting in up to 50 separate sessions. The meeting host can choose to split the participants of the meeting into these separate sessions automatically or manually, and can switch between sessions at any time.
  • Meeting Recordings:  You can record your Zoom meeting or webinar locally to your computer or to the Zoom cloud if you are a licensed user. Files stored on the cloud can be accessed on your desktop or from the web. Locally recorded meetings and webinars can only be accessed on the computer that recorded the meeting. 
  • Integrations: Integrated into Blackboard, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Devices:  Get connected on your workstation, your mobile devices, or telephone.
  • Platforms:  Zoom can be used on various platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Blackberry, and H.323/SIP room systems
  • Virtual Backgrounds: You can display an image or video as a background in Zoom meetings. There are custom UAlbany branded backgrounds available.
  • Polling:  The polling feature for meetings allows you to create single choice or multiple choice polling questions for your meetings. You will be able to launch the poll during your meeting and gather the responses from your attendees. You also have the ability to download a report of polling after the meeting. Polls can also be conducted anonymously, if you do not wish to collect participant information with the poll results.
  • Audio Transcriptions of Cloud Recordings automatically transcribe the audio of a meeting or webinar that you record to the cloud. 
  • Whiteboard/Annotation:  The whiteboard feature will allow you to share a whiteboard that you and other participants (if allowed) can annotate on.

Getting Connected

To use Zoom for video conferencing you will need:

  • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
  • Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth
  • A webcam or HD webcam - built-in or USB plug-in
  • Or, a HD cam or HD camcorder with video capture card
