Attackers use a variety of methods to scam you, including text messaging, email, and electronic forms. Protect yourself by following a few simple rules:
If you get random requests for Duo-2 step your account has been compromised and someone has your password. Select "I'm not logging in" and reset your password immediately!
Be skeptical of emails that include job opportunities that promise high wages for minimal work or job opportunities that you did not apply or interview for.
ITS will not contact you via any method (text, call, or email) to obtain your password or 2-Step with Duo code.
Use Phish Alert to report any suspicious email messages.
- Deny any request for Duo 2-step that you didn’t initiate and reset your password immediately. The scammer may attempt several times to send a Duo request via text or phone call. You must change your password immediately to stop the scammer.
- Just because a job offer comes from a University email account doesn’t make it legitimate. Be suspicious of job opportunity emails that do not originate from known sources, such as Handshake, University offices, etc. If you receive an offer sent from a UAlbany email account you are not familiar with, you should confirm with the sender that the email is legitimate before filling out any webforms.
- Be careful when providing personal information on any webform. Your email address and mobile number are used by scammers. They often ask for your previous school email account. That is not needed for legitimate job offers.
- UAlbany’s ITS does not text students. Do not respond to text messages claiming to be from the University’s Information Technology Services department or regarding the shutting down access to your University email or other technology resources.
Beware: Examples of scammer Texts, Emails, and Webforms
Text Message:
If you receive any text messages regarding your UAlbany account, DENY the request and RESET your password.
Online Forms:
Exercise caution with online forms, especially ones that come in unsolicited email messages. Always confirm the form is from a credible source. If you have completed an online form that you suspect may be fraudulent, RESET your password as soon as possible.
