What you need to know

Overview

On June 1, 2024, ITS will begin pushing required Win11 upgrade and Win10 updates to all university-owed computers. Computers that are too old to accommodate Win11 will receive a Win10 update instead. In some cases, a computer may need to receive and complete two Win10 updates. (I see some references to the possibility of needing 2 Win10 updates but no details. Needs clarity.)

Upgrade/Update before June 1 to minimize disruption

ITS recommends updating your university-owned machine beginning on May 1, 2024 to minimize disruption to your work. Do this yourself using your computer's Software Center, or contact the ITS Service Desk to request assistance.  ITS strongly suggests installing the appropriate Win 11 upgrade or Win10 update(s) before you leave for the summer. Taking this action now will minimize disruptions when you return in Fall 2024.

What happens after June 1, 2024

Computers that are not upgraded or updated by June 1, 2024, will automatically receive the required Win11 upgrade or Win10 updates pushed to their computer. When updates are pushed, installation can begin at any time. It may start when you first connect your machine to the campus network, or at any other time. Installs cannot be stopped once they start, and they begin without warning. As updates take ~90 minutes, they can be highly disruptive. Avoid the interruption by installing upgrades/updates early.

Get Started

  1. On May 1, 2024, ITS will push the appropriate  Win11 upgrade or Win10 update to your computer's Software Center. Insert info about how to find/use Software Center.
  2. Select and follow the prompts to install. (This might be a reasonable place to reiterate starting at COB and saying how long it takes.)
  3. If you would prefer assistance or have questions, contact the ITS Service Desk or visit our FAQ page.

Three ways to upgrade (not sure this is needed)
