You can now use a built-in function in both the Outlook client (Windows only) and the Outlook Web App (OWA) to report–and remove–suspicious email messages. With the message highlighted in the preview pane, or opened to view, clicking on the Phish Alert icon forwards a copy to our Information Security team (infosec@albany.edu) and deletes the message from your email account.
Be a Cyber Security Super Hero
Forwarding suspicious emails helps ITS alert other possible recipients and take measures to protect the campus from malicious attachments, links, and social engineering attacks (e.g, phishing emails).
Outlook Client
In the Outlook client, the Phish Alert feature is available on the top right corner of the Home ribbon. Clicking on the Phish Alert icon selects the email you have highlighted or opened and displays a prompt asking you confirm that you want to report the message. Selecting "Yes" will result in the message being forwarded to infosec@albany.edu and deleting the copy of the message in your email account. A "Thank You" pop-up will appear confirming that the message was forwarded. Selecting "No," results in no action.
OWA
The only difference between the Outlook and OWA Phish Alert is its location. In OWA you will find the link embedded in the email, located just between the To: field in the message header and the body of the email. Otherwise, the behavior is the same.
Email Filters and Future Messages
Please note that forwarding a copy of a suspicious email does not create any rules or filters that would apply to future messages, even ones identical to the forwarded message.
