I can't edit in OneNote for Windows 10

Summary

If you are using OneNote for Windows 10 and find that your notebooks are read‑only or you cannot type or make changes, move to the newer OneNote app that is part of the Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft support for OneNote for Windows 10 ended October 14, 2025, and the app is now read‑only. This version will also be removed from University‑managed devices.

Why this happens

Microsoft is retiring OneNote for Windows 10 on Windows 10. As support ends, the app enters read‑only mode. Editing your notebooks requires using the OneNote desktop app that comes with Microsoft 365 apps or the web version of OneNote.

Quick fix: Use the OneNote desktop app

  1. Press Start, type OneNote, then open the app named OneNote (look for the full ribbon interface).

    • If you only see OneNote for Windows 10, install Microsoft 365 apps for enterprise using Software Center on University‑managed devices or via Microsoft 365 Apps on personal devices.

  2. In OneNote, select File > Open and choose your notebook from OneDrive.

  3. Verify you can edit normally.
