Unity - Fixing "Error launching the Editor" in Unity Hub

When to use this: You see a "There was an unexpected error while trying to launch the Editor" dialog when creating or opening a Unity project, but the Unity Editor itself works fine when launched directly.

This is caused by Unity Hub having a stale or broken registration for the installed Editor. The fix is to remove the broken entry and re-locate the Editor manually.

Steps

1. Open Unity Hub

Launch Unity Hub from the Start Menu or desktop shortcut.

2. Go to the Installs tab

Click Installs in the left-hand sidebar. You should see your installed Editor version listed (e.g. Unity 6 (6000.3.17f1)).

3. Remove the existing editor entry

Click the Manage gear next to the installed editor, and select Remove from Hub.

Note: This only removes Hub's reference to the editor — it does not uninstall or delete the actual Editor files from disk. Your install at C:\Program Files\Unity 6000.3.17f1\Editor\ (or the equivalent path for your version) stays untouched.

4. Re-add the editor via "Locate"

  • Still on the Installs tab, click Locate.

  • Browse to the Editor executable:

C:\Program Files\Unity <VERSION>\Editor\Unity.exe

For example, for Unity 6000.3.17f1:

C:\Program Files\Unity 6000.3.17f1\Editor\Unity.exe
  • Select Unity.exe and confirm.

The version number in the path will change depending on which Editor version was deployed to your machine. Check the Installs tab in Hub, or the folder name under C:\Program Files\, to confirm the exact version if you're not sure.

5. Confirm it's registered

The editor should now reappear in the Installs tab, listed the same way it was before.

6. Try creating a project again

Go to the Projects tab → New project → select the re-located editor version → create the project. It should launch normally.
