Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN Client Installation (Windows)

Action

To install the GlobalProtect VPN client on a Windows computer, follow the steps below.

Instructions

Windows 10/11 is required to install this client. Windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported for it.

  1. Open a web browser and go to https://uavpn.albany.edu. JavaScript must be enabled to proceed (instructions can be found on enable-javascript.com).

  2. The standard University log in page should appear in a separate window. Sign in with your University at Albany NetID and password.


  3. Select your preferred method of authenticating with Duo. Check 'Remember me for 30 days' to prevent Duo prompts on that device for 30 days.


  4. Download the appropriate GlobalProtect client for your operating system.

  5. Run the GlobalProtect setup application and click Next to begin.

  6. Click Next to leave the installation folder as the default location (C:\Program Files\Palo Alto Networks\GlobalProtect), or choose a different folder and then click Next.

    If you encounter the following error during installation:

    There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

    Ensure that you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable installed. The 32-bit Windows client requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86), and the 64-bit Windows client requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64). Both versions are available on the Microsoft site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784

  7. Click Close to exit the installation wizard.

  8. A GlobalProtect window should appear in the bottom right corner. Enter the portal address uavpn.albany.edu

  9. The GlobalProtect window will ask you to sign in using your browser.


  10. The standard University log in page should appear in a separate window. Sign in with your University at Albany NetID and password.


  11. Select your preferred method of authenticating with Duo. Check 'Remember me for 30 days' to prevent Duo prompts on that device for 30 days.


  12. Once you have approved your Duo authentication request, you should see a GlobalProtect window stating that you are now connected.

Disconnecting from the VPN

  1. Select the GlobalProtect icon in the notification area at the lower right to bring up the VPN connection window.
  2. Click Disconnect to end the VPN session.

Connecting to the VPN

  1. To open the GlobalProtect VPN client:
    • Start > Palo Alto Networks > GlobalProtect (folder) > GlobalProtect
  2. When prompted, enter your NetID and password, and click Connect.
  3. The GlobalProtect icon will be minimized in the notification area at the lower right.
