Secondary Backup Methods: Security Key & Touch ID

If you choose to purchase a Security Key on your own or set up Touch ID, please be aware that these authentication methods are considered secondary back-up methods due to the fact that they won't work with all University applications such as the VPN and the CBORD app.  The Duo Mobile app needs to be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play and set up as the primary authentication method.

Supported Browsers

Not all browsers support all Duo authentication methods (i.e. Touch ID or Security Key).  Different authenticators may require a different browser or new minimum version.  Please verify WebAuthn supported browser functionality for your chosen authentication method.

Security Key

A Security Key plugs into your USB port and when tapped or pressed it sends a signed response back to Duo to verify your login.  It requires advanced understanding to use and should only be used as a back-up method, as it is not compatible with the UAlbany VPN or the CBORD app.  ITS does not provide security keys. In order to use a security key successfully, you must have certain criteria in place and purchase a compatible security key.

Touch ID

Touch ID is known as platform authenticator as it is built into the device you use to access services and applications protected by Duo. There are various platform authenticators, as well as multiple set-up steps, in order to use them successfully. Touch ID and other platform authenticators should only be used as back-up methods, as they are not compatible with the UAlbany VPN or the CBORD app.Â
