Once you have clicked the file name, the web app will be initiated. You can select whether you want to edit open the file with your local version of the Microsoft Office application (if Office is installed on your workstation) or the relevant Office Online app.
You will see the document opened in a read-only format. Click on the down arrow next to Edit Document to display the choices:
Using Office Online
In the above example, if you select Edit Open in Word Online, you are selecting the Microsoft Office Online application. The Office Online apps provide most of the commonly used features found in Office.

In the above example, if you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer and you select Edit Open in Word, then it will open the document with the version of Word that is installed on your computer.
Note If you are a UAlbany student and do not have the Microsoft Office apps installed on your computer, you can download Office 365 Pro Plus to get them. For most edits, using the Word Online version should suffice.
- You may see a warning message. Click Launch Application to continue.
- You may also be prompted to log in to OneDrive for Business again before it allows you to open the document using the local application.
- You may also need to enable editing to continue.
- Once you have made your changes, click on File -> Save as you would normally do to save the document to OneDrive for Business, and exit from the Microsoft Office application.
