There are several avenues for getting connected to OneDrive for Business, depending on the computer or device you are using.  This article assumes you are logged into OneDrive for Business in a web browser.

Concurrent Editing

It is also possible to have multiple people editing a document at the same time.

Opening a file for editing

Microsoft Office files stored in OneDrive for Business can be edited with either your local copy of Microsoft Office or with Microsoft Office Online.

To get started, click the file name.

Editing the file

Once you have clicked the file name, the web app will be initiated. You can select whether you want to edit the file with your local version of the Microsoft Office application (if Office is installed on your workstation) or the relevant Office Online app.

You will see the document opened in a read-only format.  Click on the down arrow next to Edit Document to display the choices:

Using Office Online

In the above example, if you select Edit in Word Online, you are selecting the Microsoft Office Online application.  The Office Online apps provide most of the commonly used features found in Office.

Please note that as you are working, the web app is saving your changes. When you are done, you do not need save the document. If you click on File, you will notice there is no Save feature. Clicking on Save As will bring up the following:

Click on your name to exit from the Microsoft Office Online app and return to your OneDrive for Business file listing.

Using your local Microsoft Office application

  1. In the above example, if you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer and you select Edit in Word, then it will open the document with the version of Word that is installed on your computer.

If you are a UAlbany student and do not have the Microsoft Office apps installed on your computer, you can download Office 365 Pro Plus to get them.  For most edits, using the Word Online version should suffice.

  2. You may see a warning message. Click Launch Application to continue.

  3. You may also be prompted to log in to OneDrive for Business again before it allows you to open the document using the local application.
  4. You may also need to enable editing to continue.
  5. Once you have made your changes, click on File -> Save as you would normally do to save the document to OneDrive for Business, and exit from the Microsoft Office application.
