Problem: Cannot log in to UAlbanyWiFi

Solution 1:

Have you ever logged into the UNIX cluster? UAlbanyWiFi uses the same password that MyUAlbany and UNIX Services do, so confirm you can login to MyUAlbany. If you cannot login, you will need to reset your password and then login to itsunix.albany.edu via FTP or SSH to push your password to the Samba database.

Solution 2:

Go to a computer that is connected via Ethernet cable and try to access your S drive. This confirms that you can login with your Samba password. If you cannot login, you will need to reset your password and then login to itsunix.albany.edu via FTP or SSH to push your password to the Samba database. Most likely, your password was not complex or too long for the Samba database.

Solution 3:

The system date and time must be the same as the school's server date and time in order for the UAlbanyWiFi network settings to be validated.

Problem: The wireless card does not have an option for WPA.

If the wireless card does not have an option for WPA2-Enterprise (i.e. only WEP, Shared); you may be unable to use UAlbanyWiFi. If the wireless card you are using was made before 2003, there is a good chance that it does not support WPA2-Enterprise. Some wireless cards made around that time can have a firmware upgrade applied in order to support WPA2-Enterprise. Check the manufacturer's website and install any driver or firmware upgrades available for the specific model card that you own. If no firmware or driver upgrade is available, you will need to upgrade your wireless card to a newer model that supports WPA2-Enterprise. Not only will a newer card be more secure, it will give you a faster and more reliable connection.

Problem: MacOS Certificate Error

The first time you connect to the UAlbanyWiFi system, your computer MAY prompt you to verify the security certificate. The message will read: "802.1X Authentication" "The server certificate is not trusted because there are no explicit trust settings". To tell the computer to always trust this certificate:

  1. Click on "Show Certificate", this open up the window to show the certificate information (long)
  2. Scroll to the bottom, and click on the disclosure arrow to show the "Trust Settings"
  3. Set "When using this certificate:" to "Always Trust".
  4. Click "Continue" and this should be done.

Manually setting the Certificate Trust

If for some reason you want to set the trust settings on the certificate, and you can't connect at that point to get it to prompt you to do it, you can also do it manually. To do so:

  1. While logged in, open "Keychain Access.app" (/Applications/Utilities)
  2. In the "X509Anchors" find the "Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority" certificate entry
  3. Double click on it to open it
  4. Scroll to the bottom, and click on the disclosure arrow to show the "Trust Settings"
  5. Set "When using this certificate:" to "Always Trust".
  6. Close the window and you should be set.

Problem: Unable to authenticate on a Mac

Once you have set up the WPA on the Mac you may from time to time have a problem authenticating. You may see full bars in the signal meter like below.

When you launch your browser you may find that you get a message stating that you have no connection. If this happens try the following.

  1. Try turning off the AirPort

  1. Turn the AirPort back on
  2. You can also try switching the Network and then back to UAlbanyWiFi
