Welcome to the University at Albany!

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides technology resources you’ll need for the duration of your studies. You can start using campus IT services right away.

Get Help

ITS offers help with the services listed below and more. For more details about services or to obtain help, please contact us.

Residential Student help:

  • For assistance with Wi-Fi and internet access in the dorms, contact Apogee at 1-866-478-8861 or www.myresnet.com. Apogee support is available 24/7.
  • For assistance with cable TV in the dorms, call Time Warner at 1-844-725-4339. Identify yourself as a University at Albany student calling about your Cable TV service.

Log In

Activate your UAlbany account to set your Password and

obtain

get your NetID. You will then be able to log in to most IT services by going to MyUAlbany

  • The MyUAlbany portal has links to many services, University news, and allows you access to your academic, financial, and other important information.

2-Step Login

You will be prompted to set up your 2-Step with Duo. This provides a security layer beyond just your password.

We recommend using the free Duo Mobile app for the best security and easiest use.


E-mail

UAlbany Mail is part of Microsoft’s Office 365 for Education and is an official contact method for the University. If you don’t already know your University e-mail address, you can see it in MyUAlbany in Other Links > Email Address.

Zoom

Zoom offers video and audio conferencing with screen-sharing and other meeting features. It is important that you activate your Zoom account in the UAlbany campus license.

  1. Go to https://albany.zoom.us

  2. Click the Sign In button

  3. You can then download the Zoom app for your computer and or mobile device sign in (always choose to Sign in with SSO, not your e-mail address)

Brightspace

Brightspace is UAlbany's Learning Management System (LMS).

Blackboard

Brightspace has many features which allow faculty to upload files and organize course content, communicate with students via announcements or email, and assign

and grade assignments easily through the browser.

When you have courses that use Blackboard, you are able to easily access course documents, contact the instructor or TAs, and check your course grades throughout the semester. At UAlbany, we have Blackboard courses that span the online spectrum: web enhanced to supplement face to face classes, blended which reduces class seat time with more online activities or fully online where students never have to come to campus.

File Storage

Office 365 includes OneDrive for Business, with 1TB of online storage and Office Web Apps to edit or collaborate on documents. For details and instructions, go to OneDrive for Business.

Computers

There are many computers with common and specialty software available for use on campus. Locations include the University libraries.

ITS recommends purchasing a Windows PC with the following specifications:

  • A minimum of 8 GB RAM (16 GB is preferred)

  • At least 256 GB hard drive space (consider if you may need more)

  • A microphone and camera (built-in or purchased separately)

We suggest only using Chromebooks, tablets and other portable equipment as secondary devices.


WiFi and Networking

UAlbany WiFi is the secure wireless service used on campus

  1. In Settings, view the available wireless networks

  2. Choose UAlbanyWiFi

  3. Enter your UAlbany NetID and Password

E-mail

UAlbany Mail is part of Microsoft’s Office 365 for Education. If you don’t already know your University e-mail address, it is posted within MyUAlbany.

To connect to UAlbany Mail on a smartphone or tablet, the following general steps should help:

  1. In Settings, choose to add an account
  2. Choose the type, Exchange or Corporate
  3. Enter your UAlbany e-mail address and your password
  4. The account should set up and may present further options for customization
  5. New messages will be automatically delivered to the device

Security

Never share password information with anyone; it keeps your data and files safe. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your computer. Be sure to have active anti-virus software installed and running, and keep the operating system and other software updated. We have some recommendations of Anti-Virus Software for Personally Owned Equipment available.

Software

In the three University libraries, ITS has computers with Microsoft Office and academic software.

Microsoft Office 365 is available for free via download through UAlbany Mail as long as you are a student at UAlbany. It allows installing a full version of Microsoft Office on up to 15 of your computers and mobile devices.

Licensed software available to students at no charge are:

  • Maple for StudentsMaple is a symbolic and numeric computing environment, and is also a multi-paradigm programming language.
  • MatLab - MathWorks produces mathematical computing software for engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and researchers. MATLAB, the language of technical computing, is a programming environment for algorithm development, data analysis, visualization, and numeric computation.

  • SAS Analytics U - SAS (Statistical Analysis System) is software suite developed by SAS Institute at the University of North Carolina State for advanced analytics, multivariate analyses, business intelligence, data management, and predictive analytics.

Computers and Printing

In the three University libraries, ITS has computers with Microsoft Office and academic software.

Printers are available in the IC areas of the Libraries. You can print from the IC computers or your own laptop!

Personal Computers and Devices:

  • If there is no requirement stated by your academic department, choose a computer that suits your personal and academic needs and preferences. The computer or mobile device should support enterprise wireless technology (WPA2-Enterprise/802.1x) for use with the wireless internet services on campus. We recommend purchase of a 3 year or 4 year service contract including accidental damage protection. Students can then contact the vendor for help with operating system or hardware issues that may occur with a computer or device they bring to campus. 
  • Within MyUAlbany is the Technology Resources section where you will find links to Apple Store for Education and Dell University programs.

File Storage

Office 365 includes OneDrive for Business, with 1TB of online storage and Office Web Apps to edit or collaborate on documents. For details and instructions, go to OneDrive for Business.

Access to your S Drive, your personal space with 100MB of storage, is available when you use ITS public use computers or a personal computer. For instructions to access, go to File Storage - S: Drive.

Training

Free non-credit workshops created by ITS are available to learn popular software applications including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and R statistical software.

VPN for off-campus access

Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows secure access to some UAlbany resources from off campus. For details and instructions, go to VPN (Virtual Private Network).


Printing

Students print for free with our Student Printing service in the University Libraries and George Education Center. Get your Student Printing Passcode, send jobs to print, and release them at any Student Printer location.
