Get Started - Enroll in 2-Step with Duo

Enroll your Mobile Device While Using a Non-Mobile Device (Laptop or Desktop)

ITS requires installing the free Duo Mobile app.
Find the latest version in the App Store or Google Play

For Android users who do not have the Google Play store available in their area, you can download the app here: http://dl.duosecurity.com/DuoMobile-latest.apk

Streamlining the Initial Multi Step Set-up Process

1.We recommend downloading the Duo Mobile app prior to beginning the enrollment process.

2. Use a separate device such as a laptop or PC to be able to read the Duo 2-Step instructions from that device. Keep your mobile device next to you while reading from your 'instructional' device. Follow the instructions and utilize your mobile device with your newly downloaded mobile app for the set-up.  Utilizing two devices will make scanning the QR code or receiving the Activation link step easier to complete.

  1. You'll be prompted to enroll in 2-Step with Duo within 24 hours of activating your account. Enter your UAlbany NetID and Password.

  2. You will be prompted with a 'Welcome to Duo Security' message to set up your account.  Select Next.

  3. Duo will begin 'Did you know?' educating you on data breaches.  Select Next.

  4. Duo will continue their educational message on 'What can you do?'.  Select Next.

  5. Select the recommended Duo Mobile option.

  6. Enter your phone number and select Add phone number.

  7. Verify your phone number by selecting Yes, it's correct.

  8. Download Duo Mobile if you haven't already done so.  Once downloaded, select Next.

  9. Scan the QR Code or Get an Activation Link

Note: If you don't have a separate device to follow the instructions on, you will not be able to scan the QR code (watch how to scan). You will need to select 'Get an activation link instead'.
*If scanning the code, you must scan from within the app.
Do Not use your camera. (See Info. details below).

When scanning the QR code you need to do the following:

    1. Open the Duo Mobile app you downloaded.
    2. Click the Add + button
    3.
    4. Tap on Use QR Code
    5. A message will appear to scan the QR code from your computer.  Scan the QR code that is displayed from your log in device.
    6. 'UAlbany' will automatically be entered as the organization on your mobile device.  Select Save.

  10. Go back to your device that you were logging in with and select Continue.

  11. Select Skip for now.

    Note:

      • A Security Key is a device you must purchase, like a Yubi key.   This is not the same as the Duo Hardware Token.
      • If you want to add another device, finish enrolling first, and then go through the process of adding another device.  For the most seamless experience, you will need to log into another browser that hasn't been remembered.

  12. Select Log in with Duo.

  13. Enter the code displayed on your login screen into your mobile device.  Note:  This is time sensitive, and you can experience a timeout and may need to start over.

  14. You will be prompted on your mobile device with a verification prompt.  Open the app to verify.

Follow the onscreen instructions and enter the verification code displayed from your login screen into your mobile device.  Select Verify.

  15. You will receive the Approved notification message from your mobile device after successfully entering the verification code.

  16. Be Cyber Smart:  To Trust or Not to Trust?
    • If you are using a public computer or kiosk select 'No, do not trust browser'
    • If you are using a personal trusted device, we recommend selecting 'Yes, trust browser' to reduce the number of times you are prompted by Duo.

  17. You have completed the Duo enrollment with verified push process successfully! You will now be brought to the UAlbany application you were trying to access.

Once you have enrolled in Duo, ITS strongly recommends adding multiple devices.  You can add, edit and remove devices as well as see the list of other available options to log in.

When prompted to use Duo as you are logging into a UAlbany service, select Other Options (ignore 3-digit code displayed) to view and manage your devices.

Select Manage Devices

Verify your Identity by selecting Duo Push.  Other options are available for various circumstances.

Enter 3 digit code in the Duo Mobile app and select verify.

Now that you are verified, you can begin to add, edit and remove your devices.

Add, edit and remove devices
by following the onscreen prompts.

    • New phone with same phone number - Select I have a new phone option.  Duo will walk you through the onscreen prompts.  By selecting edit, you can rename your device to distinguish it from other devices.
  • New phone number or new phone number with new device you will select Add a device.
