What is Microsoft 365 Apps?

Microsoft 365 Apps (M365) is the name of the latest version of Microsoft Office that enables you to:

  • Work from the very latest versions of:  Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Sway, and Publisher, and open, edit, and save your files directly from your OneDrive for Business space, Microsoft Teams, or other Office 365 locations.
  • Work collaboratively with your group across all your devices.
  • Work with the very latest version of your documents. All the time.
  • You can use the Online Office Apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in any web browser without installing Office on your computer.
  • M365 is a subscription license that begins as soon as your UAlbany Mail account is created and ends when your UAlbany Mail account expires. Instances of Microsoft 365 Apps installed on your computers will go into reduced functionality mode after that point.  (You can open and view existing files, but most features are unavailable.)
  • The apps get installed on your computer and are available even when your computer is offline.  Your computer must be online at least once every 30 days or the apps will go into reduced functionality mode until the license subscription can be verified online again.

University-Owned Computers

Beginning in Spring 2021, Microsoft 365 Apps is installed on University computers in public spaces like classrooms and conference rooms.  Computers assigned to individuals will also be upgraded to M365.

Personally-Owned Computers

UAlbany faculty, staff, and students are entitled to install and use Microsoft 365 Apps (M365) on personally-owned devices while they have UAlbany Mail email accounts. *

*Certain non-employee affiliations are not eligible to install and run M365 Apps locally.
