Overview

  • ITS is moving all Department and Center files and folders from the O: Drive (on a server called CASBox) to a new CAS share in the V: Drive (on a server called Lincoln).
    • Everyone: Log out of all computers that access CASBox shares the night before your migration.
    • Windows users: Your new CAS share will be mapped automatically for University Windows computers on campus.  It will be your V: Drive instead of your O: or P: Drive. You will need to manually map the V: Drive from off-campus. See File Storage - Mapping Network Drives for details.
    • Mac and Linux users: You will need to manually map/mount the V: Drive (Lincoln) to access your folders.  See File Storage - Mapping Network Drives for details.
  • The only changes are to the share and folder names at the top level of your folders. The contents of all files, other folders, and permissions will not change.
  • Folder names will be prefixed by an identifier using a department abbreviation (e.g. AFS- for Africana Studies) or center name (e.g. Mumford-).
  • Teaching and Research drives are not being changed at this time; only Department and Center drives.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

What is happening to O:Drive (CASBox)?

All O: Drive (CASBox) content is being moved to the V: Drive (on a server called "Lincoln"), one of the file storage solutions ITS provides to the campus community. All CASBox content will be saved to give the College ample time to assure all files and folders are accounted for. Then CASBox will eventually be retired.

 What is *not* changing?

Your Research R: Drive is not affected by this change.

Mac users will still need to map the new V: Drive -- same as they needed to map the O: Drive before.

File names and folders under the top-level folders.

What about my other O: Drive (CASBox) stuff like teaching or research?

These will not be changing as part of this migration.  There will be another project to address other CAS drives.

 How were my folders renamed?

Folder names on V: Drive (Lincoln) were kept the same from O: Drive (CASBox), other than having the Department or Center's name or abbreviation prefixed to the new top-level folder names.  See a full list of CAS Department Share Folder Name Prefixes.

For example, multiple departments had a folder in their share called "Common".  As there can only be one folder with that name in the new CAS-wide share at the top level, each folder there got its department prefix added to it.  For example, BIO-Common, AFS-Common, CHM-Common, etc. were created.

What if I can't find my files?

Contact the ITS Service Desk for help relocating them.

What about my "Recent Documents" in applications?

You will have to update or recreate shortcuts to files in your O: Drive in your "Recent Documents" lists.

 What about my desktop shortcuts?

You will have to update or recreate shortcuts to files in your O: Drive on your desktop.

What happened to all of the sub-folders in my share?

They are in the same corresponding V: Drive (Lincoln) folder that replaced the original O: Drive (CASBox) top-level folder.

How can I access my files from off-campus?

See File Storage - Mapping Network Drives for details on how to access your files from on or off-campus.

Do I still need to use the VPN to access my files/folders from off campus after the migration?

Yes.  This is the same as before.

I'm a Windows user. How can I access my files now?

Your former O: Drive (CASBox) share has been moved to the V: Drive (Lincoln) and is already mapped for you on your University computer.   See File Storage - Mapping Network Drives for details on how to access your files from on or off-campus.

What about Mac users? How can I access my files now?

Just as before on the O: Drive (CASBox), Mac users will need to manually map the V: Drive (Lincoln) to access their folders.  See File Storage - Mapping Network Drives for details.

What about Linux users? How can I access my files now?

Just as before on the O: Drive (CASBox), Linux users will need to manually map the V: Drive (Lincoln) to access their folders.  Change the location from \\casbox.univ.albany.edu\DepartmentName to \\lincoln.univ.albany.edu\CAS.

What happens the first time I access my files after this change?

It should be very similar to how you accessed your files before the change, except under your V: Drive instead of your O: Drive.  If you don't have the new drive mapped, see File Storage - Mapping Network Drives for details on how to access your files from on or off-campus.

How do I control access to my folders now?

The owner of a departmental folder in the divisional file space (V: Drive) can manage access to their folders using Group Access Manager.

Will the content I currently have access to change?

No.  The top-level folder names may have changed slightly by being prefixed with an identifier using a department abbreviation (e.g. AFS- for Africana Studies) or center name (e.g. Mumford-), but your files and folders will otherwise be unchanged.

What if I have more than one CASBox share - an O: Drive and a P: Drive?

You will see the contents of both your O: and P: Drives within the new V: Drive.  The top-level folder names will have a prefix added to them indicating to which department or center they belong so you'll still know which is which.

Will I be able to access the O: Drive (CASBox) after this change?

Not directly, but all of your content will be available to you in the new V: Drive.  In the event you are unable to find some of your content, contact the ITS Service Desk for assistance.

Will there be any time where I won't be able to access my O: Drive prior to the migration?

No.  You will have access to your O: Drive until the day of your department's migration, when your content will be available to you in the V: Drive. This date will be communicated to you well in advance of the change.

What happened to my sub-folders with unique permissions?

They were moved up to the top level of the V: Drive (Lincoln).  The same people who had access to the original folders still have access.
