Computer FAQS - Upgrade Project

Q: Why does my university-owned computer have to be replaced?

A: ITS requires all computers to be in compliance with the Policy for University-Owned Computers.

Windows 10 will be end of life in October 2025 when Microsoft will stop providing security updates. Nearly half of all university-owned workstations, including those in research labs, classrooms, and conference rooms, will need to be replaced to be in compliance with the Policy for University-Owned Computers.

Q: How does ITS know what computers need to be replaced?

A: ITS uses a centralized inventory to identify computers needing replacement.  Computers purchased during or before 2018 probably won't be able to run Windows11.

Q: I know I will need a new computer. When will ITS replace it?

A: Between now and Fall 2025.  ITS will work with your department to replace it.

Q: What kind of computer will I get?

A: ITS will replace computers with the Standard Computer Configuration for Faculty and Staff.

Q: How should I prepare for my new computer?

A: If you have files stored locally (i.e., on your Desktop, Documents, etc.) you want to keep, learn more about Backing Up Your Computer.

Recommendations to prepare.

Q: What if I need multiple computers?

A: ITS will fund one computer per faculty or staff. If you have a desktop and a laptop, ITS will replace with a laptop and monitor/docking station. If multiple computers are needed, the department or research funds will be responsible for additional computers.

Q:  Can I keep the old computer that ITS replaced?

A:  ITS will require you to give up your old computer when the new computer is delivered. ITS will surplus and securely dispose of all old computers.

Q:  I haven't finished backing up files from my old computer and my new computer is being delivered today.  Can I keep my old computer for a few days?

A:  If you are not yet ready to give up your old computer, ITS will reschedule your appointment.  Your old computer must be given to ITS for secure disposal when your new computer is delivered.

Q: I have other uses for the computer that was replaced. Why can't I keep it?

A: Unsupported equipment is vulnerable and puts the entire University network at risk. Consult with ITS for more information.

Q: What computers are exempt from centralized funding?

A:  Computers funded by grants, researchers, self-supported centers, institutes, and labs. Requests for high-end configuration will be the responsibility of the department, researcher or self-supported center, institute, or lab.
