If the sender of an email wishes to recall a sent message the following steps will show how:

1. Open Outlook

2. Left click on the "Sent Items" subfolder

3. Double click on the email in question so that the email opens in its own window.

4. Left click on "Actions" in the options at the top of the email window

5. Expand the Actions list to it's full size by clicking on the arrow icon at the bottom of the subdirectory

6. Select "Recall this Message"-

the sent message then will be returned to sender.

Please Note: This option only works for messages sent between Exchange Account, and will not have any effect on messages sent to other mail systems including the Unix/Webmail environment. So, if the message was sent to  xxxxx@Albany.edu. the great likelihood will be that message will not be recoverable This feature requires you to use a Microsoft Exchange e-mail account. The recipient of the mail you want to recall must also be using an Exchange e-mail account. For example, you cannot recall a message sent to someone's personal (gmail, yahoo) account. Also, if the message was sent to xxxxx@Albany.edu, it most likely cannot be recalled.

There are two options with recalling a message, you can either delete the message or replace the original message with a new version.

  1. In Mail, in the Navigation Pane, click Sent Items.
  2. Open the message you want to recall or replace.
  3. On the Actions menu, click Recall This Message.
  4. Click Delete unread copies and replace with a new message.
    • If you are sending the message to a large number of people, you may want to consider clearing the Tell me if recall succeeds or fails for each recipient check box.
  5. Click OK, and then type a new message and include the attachment."
  6. Click Send.

  2. Open the message you want to recall or replace.
  3. On the Actions menu, click Recall This Message.
  4. Click Delete unread copies of this message.

  5. Select whether only to delete the message or to delete and replace the message.
  6. Select the check box to receive a confirmation that the recall was successful
