Overview
ITS is updating the University to The version of Microsoft Office installed campus-wide on University workstations, computers in classrooms, conference rooms, and other shared spaces is Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (M365), the most current version of Microsoft Office. This will provide provides a consistent, modern collaboration experience for the entire campus community. This change will affect the version of Office that is installed on University-owned computers. The web-based version of Office apps will not be affected.
What To Expect
Computers will be updated campus-wide, so you may see changes on your personal University-owned computer, as well as in classrooms, conference rooms, and other spaces with public devices. Prior to your computer being updated, you will receive communication from ITS or your Technology Coordinator with details.

Before you can use any M365 application (like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel), you must sign in with your UAlbany credentials to activate M365 for that computer. In order to sign in to activate M365 Apps, you will need to complete 2-Step Login with Duo. You may need to authenticate using 2-Step Login with Duo, so be sure to have a Duo-registered device with you. If you are unable to complete 2-Step Login on a computer where you have not yet activated M365, you will still be able to use M365 apps (like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel), but they will function in Reduced Functionality Mode. |

For computers managed by ITS:
Windows users have two options:
- To control the timing of the M365 upgrade, you may install M365 on your University-owned computer. See How to get Microsoft 365 Apps for your computer for instructions.
University-owned Windows computers that are not running M365 will be updated automatically on a weeknight between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
Tip icon false title To ensure a successful update: - Check your computer’s energy setting to keep it “awake” for the update.
- At the end of each workday this week, save and close all open files and programs. Do not log back in or shut down your computer.
Mac computers must be updated manually using the instructions above. If you need assistance, contact the ITS Service Desk.
