To download, install, and set up PuTTY for connecting to Academic Linux Virtual Machines, follow the instructions below.

Instructions

Acquiring PuTTY for your PC

1. Go to http://www.putty.org

2. Click on the link "here" under Download PuTTY --> You can download PuTTY here. (Figure 1)

3. Scroll down to A Windows MSI installer package for everything except PuTTYtel (Figure 2) and click on putty-m.nn-installer.msi (where m.nn is Major.Minor release format)

4. Save the downloaded file to a location you will remember (Desktop or Downloads)

5. Go to the location of the MSI file and Double-Click on it

6. Click Next (Figure 3)

7. Allow it to Install PuTTY to the default directory (Figure 4), Click Next

8. Click on the drive next to Add shortcut to PuTTY on the desktop and choose Entire feature will be unavailable (Figure 5), Click Install (you may receive a User Account Control warning, click on Yes to install)

9. Click Finish

Configuring PuTTY (One time)

1. Configure the default settings (make the screen a little easier to read)

   1. Click on Default Settings (Figure 6)

   2. Click on Load

   3. In the Category Tree, select Window --> Appearance (Figure 7)

   4. In the Font settings group, click on the Change button

   5. Change the Font to Consolas, Font style to Regular and Size to 20, Click OK - This is an easy to read font at a reasonable font size

   6. In the Category Tree, select Session

   7. Click on Default Settings (Figure 6)

   8. Click on Save

2. Create an entry for PS Production and Development Process Schedulers

   1. Enter pspps002.itsli.albany.edu into the Host Name (or IP address) textbox (Figure 8)

   2. Enter PS Production Process Scheduler in the Saved Sessions textbox

   3. Click on the Save button

   4. Enter psdps002.itsli.albany.edu into the Host Name (or IP address) textbox (Figure 8)

   5. Enter PS Development Process Scheduler in the Saved Settings textbox

   6. Click on the Save button

3. Click Cancel to close PuTTY

Starting PuTTY

1. Click on Start

2. Click on All Programs

3. Click on the PuTTY group

4. Click on PuTTY

5. Click on a Saved Session

6. Click Load

7. Click Open
