Description

The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cyber Security has a departmental learning space in ETEC-340.  This is a multi-purpose room used for academic collaborative activities.  The room includes classroom AV functionality and 20 laptops that are used by faculty, staff, students, and guests.  The department intends to utilize the laptops solely in ETEC-340.

Utilization of Laptops

WiFi Access

  • The 20 laptops provided by CEHC for use in ETEC-340 are configured to automatically connect to the WiFi network with no need for user network log-in.

  • The laptops are configured to connect only to WiFi and only in ETEC-340.

  • Please do not remove the laptops from ETEC-340 as they cannot connect to the network elsewhere.

Windows Log-on

  • UAlbany faculty, staff, and students may log-in to Windows using their UAlbany NetID and Password credentials.

  • Guests may log-in to Windows using the guest account credentials provided on location by the CEHC Dean’s office representative or made available by your CEHC event organizer.

Software and File Management

  • The laptops have the standard set of classroom software installed with Windows 10.

  • The laptops should be considered public computers and users must assume that anyone using the laptops can access all files saved to the devices.

  • CEHC recommends that all users store any file content created during use in a cloud storage service, such as Microsoft OneDrive.

Storage and charging

  • When not in use, store the laptops plugged into the charging cart located in the ETEC-340 AV closet to ensure the batteries are charged and that the devices receive necessary software updates and patches.

  • Failure to properly store the laptops in the charging cart could result in software updates and patches not being installed or being installed at a time that could disrupt normal use of the device.

FAQ

What if my laptop doesn’t connect to the network?

The laptops are configured to connect to WiFi only in ETEC-340. 

Attempt to reconnect the device to WiFi.

  • Find the network password for the laptop device name on the device list attached to the charging cart.

  • With the laptop displaying the Windows splash screen, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete

  • Click the Network Connection icon

  • Click “Hidden Network”

  • Enter "UA-IPSK" for the SSID (or network name).

  • Enter the password associated to the laptop device name from the device list.

What if my laptop is not charged?

  • To prevent this from occurring, the laptops need to be stored in the charging car when not in use.

  • If the laptop has no charge, contact the event organizer to obtain a charging cable to plug into an available outlet.

I’m a UAlbany faculty, staff, or student and I can’t log in to Windows.

I’m a guest and I can’t log in to Windows.

  • Refer to the event organizer to ensure that you’re using the CEHC Laptop Learning Space guest account username and password.

  • If you still cannot log in but others can on the other laptops, contact the ITS Service Desk and provide the following information:

    • Indicate the issue relates to CEHC Laptop Learning Space

    • Provide your name

    • Provide the laptop device name affixed to the laptop.

    • Place the laptop in the charging cart for ITS to diagnose.

I’m trying to use a laptop but it is running a software update.

  • Software updates are scheduled to be performed overnight.

  • If your use is interrupted by a software update, it’s most likely due to the laptop being powered off and/or not stored properly in the charging station.

  • Place the laptop plugged into the charging cart located in the ETEC-340 AV closet to allow the update to conclude.
