Packaging AIPs for preservation storage
For finalizing packages of digital records and sending them to permanent preservation storage.
When a package is initially ingested, a duplicate version (that you do not see) is created to ensure that any edits/removals you make can be reverted back to the original form. When you package the version in the backlog folder, you combine your edits with this duplicate copy to be kept in the preservation package in the AIP. But you may not want to keep everything from the masters or derivative folders, that why this step gives you the options to Update (override) the duplicate master folder, or ignore (don’t preserve) the derivatives folder.
Once all meaningful digital files in a package have been described in ArchivesSpace and uploaded to Spe_DAO, enter the package ID.
Optionally, select to "Update master files":
Only use this option if you have edited or removed files in the \masters folder and you would like to keep these changes instead of the files that were originally ingested during the Ingest step.
Most likely, this is for removing files that were ingesting into the SIP, but are not records and/or are not worth retaining permanently.
Optionally, select to "Ignore derivatives":
Only use this option if the files in the \derivatives folder are not useful to retain permanently. This should be rarely used.
An example use case is if you created derivatives that were not really useful, or files are so extremely large that it doesn't make sense to keep an additional derivative copy outside of Spe_DAO.
