Archive How ITS Manages University-owned Computers

ITS uses the tools below to efficiently manage university-owned computers.  These tools do the following:

  • Deploy patches and software

  • Maintain the University computer inventory

  • Protect against malware and viruses

Ensuring that all computers are patched and running a supported operating system is the first step in maintaining security and is required by university policy if a device is connected to the UAlbany network .

All university-owned computers, including research funded computers, must be:

  • Joined to the UAlbany Windows domain

  • Enrolled in AllSight for inventory management

  • macOS computers must be enrolled in Jamf for deployment of patches and software.

  • Windows computers must have MECM client installed for deployment of patches and software.

  • Have Microsoft Defender installed for protection from viruses, malware and compromises.

Need a definition for Domain, would like to have something from Microsoft but couldn't find anything that was end user friendly:

What is Active Directory domain (AD domain)?

An Active Directory domain (AD domain) is a collection of objects within a Microsoft Active Directory network. An object can be a single user or a group, or it can be a hardware component, such as a computer or printer. Each domain holds a database containing object identity information.

In practice, AD is fundamentally a database designed to hold all the relevant information about users and endpoints -- such as servers and computers -- across the enterprise network. AD also provides a suite of directory services that associate those network resources with their network addresses, ensuring that information is available to the entire network. In addition, AD handles security, such as authentication, to ensure that only valid users are allowed onto the network and authorization to ensure that valid users can only access resources to which they're entitled.

A domain is a logical grouping of the objects held within Active Directory. Objects within a domain share common administration, security and protection behaviors. IT staff are responsible for managing objects within a domain and an enterprise can establish numerous domains. Every Active Directory domain requires a domain controller (DC).
