Research Data Storage

Research Data Storage

ITS provides 10GB of personal research data storage and 10TB of shared storage for research groups through a centralized NetApp disk storage system that is encrypted at rest, compressed, de-duplicated, and backed up via "snapshot" daily for 21 days and hourly for the past 23 hours. All data is password protected, and research directory access is controlled by each research group manager. Research data can be accessed from any computer on campus, with off-campus access requiring 2-factor authentication and VPN connection. Research directories are also mounted to and accessible from the UAlbany high-performance computing cluster. Guest accounts are available by request, allowing for the transfer of research data or collaboration with research groups or individuals from outside the University.

The centralized NetApp disk storage system is housed in UAlbany's state-of-the-art, secure Tier III-certified data center facility, which is an N+1 concurrently maintainable, LEED Gold facility with network availability of 99.9%. ITS manages this data center, which houses the equipment and systems that support enterprise-wide information, storage, and telecommunications services for the institution's teaching, research, and administrative needs. The facility also provides co-location opportunities for research centers, departments, and researchers.
