LISTSERV Sender Settings

Action

To access the sender settings for a Listserv list you manage, follow the steps below.

Instructions

  1. Log in to your LISTSERV Dashboard.

Note: To complete the steps in this document, you will need to edit the list header, and so will need to be an Owner of your list.

  2. Select the list you wish to manage:

  3. On the left side, click List Configuration:

  4. Choose Subscriptions:

  5. Scroll down the page until you see the keyword Send=.
  6. ITS has two recommended settings. Which setting you use depends on how the list is to be used.
    1. The first setting that could be used is Send= Private,Confirm.
Any subscriber can send to the list, but LISTSERV will request confirmation from the sender using the OK mechanism. If the sender responds with "ok", the message will be posted to the list.

    2. The second setting you could use is Send= Editor,Hold,Confirm.
Only addresses listed in the Editor= keyword can post to the list without moderation. Editors are still required to confirm their own postings, to avoid spoofing. Any message from a non-editor address attempting to post to the list will be forwarded to the first editor listed (or Moderator= addresses, if defined). The editor or moderator(s) must be careful not to OK these or they will be distributed. (If there is an Editor= entry with the list name in parentheses, e.g. Editor= (listname-l), all subscribers of that listname are also included in the message delivery.) Use this setting to protect your list from someone trying to forge email from the Editor's address. Note: The "Hold" option is valid only with Send= Editor.

Commonly used access-level settings, and their descriptions:

  • Send= Public: Anyone, including spammers, can send mail or files to the list.  Note: This is NOT recommended.
  • Send= Public,Confirm: Anyone can send to the list, but LISTSERV will request confirmation from the sender using the OK mechanism. If the sender responds with "ok", the message will be posted to the list.
  • Send= Private: Only people who are subscribed to the list may send mail or files to the list. This setting won't protect your list from someone forging (i.e., spoofing) a subscriber's email address, and unwanted email can still get to the list.  Note: This is NOT recommended.
  • Send= Private,Confirm: Only people who are subscribed to the list may post to the list. LISTSERV will request confirmation from subscribers via the OK mechanism. Non-subscribers will not be able to post to the list; LISTSERV will send them a rejection message. Use this setting to protect your list from senders of forged email.
  • Send= Editor,Hold,Confirm: Only addresses listed in the Editor= keyword can post to the list without moderation.
  • Send= Owner: Only the list owner may send to the list.

To cut down on spam on public and edited lists, you can configure the Send keyword to require non-subscribers to confirm their postings. To do this, select Public and Confirm, and then choose Update to save that setting.  Then check Only non-Member confirm:

  • Send= Public,Confirm,Non-Member: For a public list
  • Send= Editor,Hold,Confirm,Non-Member: For an edited list
